While most kids have a Christmas list a mile long, Safyre Terry – an 8-year-old girl, who was severely burned in a suspected arson fire that killed her family – wants just one thing: cards.
Her aunt Liz Dolder, who received custody of Safyre after her father, sister and two brothers were killed in the fire, posted a photo of the child on the Safyre Schenectady’s Super Survivor, where she is standing next to her metal card holder in the shape of a Christmas tree. Along with the photo, her aunt wrote that Safyre is excited to fill it up. Not wanting to get her hopes up too high, she told Safyre the tree holds about 100 cards but their family typically only receives around 10.
That’s when the kindness of the internet kicked in, as it so often does (seriously – there’s lots of good people on the internet). As her Christmas wish spreads all over social media, letters have been pouring in from all around the world, while thousands of other people have pledged to send a card along with well wishes and holiday cheer. A funding campaign shared in Reddit’s Uplifting News community by Redditor StillEnjoyLegos has raised more than $233,407, exponentially surpassing its $15,000 goal.
According to the fundraising page, the family can use more than just cards. Liz’s husband Mike has recently lost his job – their only source of income. (Can you imagine being the person to lay him off?!) Along with Safyer, the couple also has a set of twins of the same age, Jasmine and Jacob. As you would suspect, Safyer has some costly medical bills, as more than 75% of her body is burned. Her right hand is amputated and she recently had her left foot amputated. And she is scheduled for another surgery next month. Fortunately, her spirit is still alive and well. Her perseverance is nothing short of spectacular.
Safyre’s mother is in custody on charges she lied to a federal grand jury about the events leading up to the 2013 fire, which is a suspected arson homicide. According to the heartbreaking reports, Safyre’s father died while shielding her from the flames with his body.
I know this story is so hard to hear. But just because something is hard for us to hear/read, doesn’t make it okay to ignore. Plus, it’s so easy to send a card! It’ll likely be the easiest kind thing you’ve done all day.
