You’re online all day anyways, so you might as well do something kind that has the power to change the world. The best part is, these things don’t require much effort… or even putting on pants.

1- VOLUNTEER YOUR SKILL

Volunteer-Online

Platforms such as Catchafire and Volunteer Match will match your skills with an organization in need. Some need help with branding, design, creating copy, marketing, etc. Basically you can volunteer with a non-profit without even getting offline.

2- GIVE A GIFT TO A COMMUNITY

Gifts-of-hope

Through Plan International USA shoppers can purchase “Gifts of Hope” for a community in need. The gifts can be one-time or recurring, and cost as low as $10. Gifts include trees, baby chicks, essentials to empower a girl, school meals, and emergency water supplies.

3- GIVE A LOAN

Kiva

Through Kiva, you can give a loan and help empower someone to better their lives. On their website you can browse the stories of those seeking loans – some to grow their business, return to school, or switch to clean energy. Then once you’ve found someone with whom you connect, click ‘lend’ and send them as little as $25. All Kiva loans are disbursed by field partners who vet and work closesly with each borrower. You can track their progress and get updated when your loan is repaid. You can then withdraw or loan that money out again to another borrower.

4- MENTOR

Net-Buddy

Me applying to become a Net-Buddy

Sign up for an online mentoring program, and become a ‘Net Buddy.’ With Infinite Family you can devote as little as 30 minutes a week and mentor a South African teen. How cool is that? I’m filling out the application process right now, and encourage everyone to do the same.

5- SHOP ONLINE … FOR GOOD

shopping-we-care

If you’re shopping online anyways, why not have a portion of that money go to charity? If you make purchases through We Care and Buy 4, they agree to donate a portion of each purchase to a charity of your choosing. The two sites have more than 1,600 partners, so you’re sure to find someone you want.

6– SEARCH AND CLICK-TO-DONATE

care-2-rewards

Click-to-donate with Care 2. Visit the website and search for a variety of causes and organizations then basically … you just click. Your free click generates donations from sponsors. Also, you can rack up points with all of your clicks, then redeem those points for gifts to make the world a better place – such as a day of safe drinking water for a child. Donating seriously doesn’t get any easier.

7- GET A DEAL WHILE HELPING OTHERS

online-grocery-shopping-

Get the Oreos. You know you want them.

Who knew others could also benefit from your sale-finding skills? When you purchase groceries through Common Kindness, you’re saving money and contributing to a charity of your choosing.

 8– MAKE A DONATION

Donate-Glide

Donate to anything you want – just donate! But if you need a suggestion, check out Glide.

Google any organization and make a donation. Search, click, fill out your info, click submit … and boom, you’ve just helped. Well done, human.

9- MAKE A TEACHING VIDEO

Ashley-Dickinson-Youtube

I do a few things on Youtube – Check out my channel.

Make a training video on a skill you’ve mastered or on something you’d like to teach people, and post it to youtube. People really use these things – so if you’re a pro at something, share it with the world. Added bonus: possibly becoming a youtube sensation.

10- LEAVE A POSITIVE REVIEW

Yelp online

Don’t just use yelp to bitch

Too often we only leave Yelp reviews when a place or service totally sucks. In doing so, we’re only giving attention to the bad, while letting the good go completely unrewarded or noticed. Screw that! So instead, leave a positive review — yelp or otherwise — for a restaurant or service. Try to also include the name of the server, or whoever it was that helped you – odds are it will help out that employee.

11- WRITE AN EMAIL JUST TO SAY HELLO

write-a-nice-email

Write a friendly, non business related email to someone you’ve lost touch with. Odds are you’ve forgotten how nice it is to send an email that isn’t work-related. This one might seem small, but sometimes a small gesture can have a large impact on someone’s life.
